Job Description
- Job period: 15 April – 30 September 2019
- Send application by: 21 March
- Reports to: Research and Program Manager
WASHPaLS, through implementing partner, the Aquaya Institute, seeks to broaden the evidence base on the use and effectiveness of sanitation interventions, including Community Based Total Santation (CLTS). Aquaya’s initial desk review has revealed that researchers and CLTS implementers agree that the CLTS approach does not perform equally well in all communities. A number of authors have characterized both programmatic conditions and contextual conditions that lead to more successful implementation.
WASHPaLS’ research attempts to i) identify the relative importance of different factors associated with performance and ii) gain an in-depth understanding of the context-specific processes underlying the sustainable eradication of open defecation.
Duties and Responsibilities
The objective of this assignment is to conduct qualitative data collection in 15 villages in rural Ghana. The tasks under responsibility of the consultant include but are not limited to:
- Participate in the testing and finalization of data collection instruments, providing inputs for their improvement in writing
- Organize focus group discussions and interviews in 15 study villages (identified by the research team and project partners).
- Conduct focus group discussions and interviews on the basis of the agreed research protocol
- Visit 2-5 latrines (with a focus on the most vulnerable households), and conduct a transect walk in the community
- Download all the data and notes compiled every day, and manage data files as defined in the standard operating procedures
- Prepare a 3-5 pages draft village report summarizing key take home messages no later than 36 hours after data collection has been completed in each village.
- Revise all transcriptions of interviews/focus group discussions to ensure accuracy. Transcriptions will be contracted to a separate consultant or service that will be specifically in charge of this component of the project.
- Type up notes for all interviews that were not audio-recorded, or meetings with partners or other key stakeholders.
- Review a final report written by Aquaya, providing detailed written comments.
- Participate to at least 3 meetings with project stakeholders.
This assignment will take place in 15 rural villages in Ghana’s Northern Region. Study districts are still to be determined. We expect data collection to take 2-3 days in each village, reporting and revision of transcription of audio files to take about 2 days per village.
In total, the consultancy will last approximately 95 days. We expect to start the assignment in April 2019.
Required Skills or Experience
- Minimum 5 years of previous professional experience required.
- University degree in anthropology, sociology, development studies, or a related field.
