Your Role
We are seeking a dedicated, full-time Assistant GIS Officer with expertise in GIS technologies, servers, APIs, databases, programming languages, data analysis, and forestry operations. The Assistant GIS Officer will play an essential role in supporting the GIS Officer by managing spatial data, assisting in developing GIS solutions, and contributing to our forest restoration and carbon credit generation initiatives.
This position requires a high level of commitment, as the GIS Assistant will collaborate closely with the GIS Officer to ensure data accuracy, process efficiency, and alignment with project goals.

Your Responsibilities
- GIS Data Management: Manage and maintain spatial databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and availability for analysis and decision-making.
- Programming and Automation: Develop scripts and tools using programming languages (e.g., Python, R) to automate GIS processes and workflows e.g. supervised classification.
- GIS Solutions Development: Develop and implement GIS solutions to support forest mapping, monitoring, and restoration planning.
- Server Management: Develop and maintain GIS servers and infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
- API Integration: Integrate GIS data and services with other systems and platforms using APIs for seamless data exchange and analysis.
- Data Analysis: Perform spatial analysis on various raster and vector datasets, geoprocessing, and data modeling to derive insights and support decision-making.
- Documentation and Reporting: Document GIS processes, methodologies, and results. Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Quality Control Oversight: Support quality control team with various maps and data points for easy monitoring.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Geospatial Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience (3+ years) in geospatial programming, GIS data management, spatial analysis, and solutions development with a strong focus on remote sensing and cartographic mapping.

- Advanced proficiency in Python for geospatial automation and analysis, particularly with libraries such as GDAL, Fiona, Shapely, Rasterio, and Scikit-learn for supervised and unsupervised image classification.
- Strong GIS and remote sensing skills with a focus on drone imagery and vector data management; experience working with satellite imagery and machine learning classification methods.
- Competency in GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, PostGIS) for data management, analysis, and integration.
- Experience with drone imagery analysis and classification techniques to support various fieldwork projects (e.g., vegetation mapping, land use classification).
- Ability to develop GIS and remote sensing solutions for field applications, including interactive maps, data integration from various sources, and web-based visualizations.
- Familiarity with web mapping technologies (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) to facilitate data access and deployment.
- Solid understanding of geospatial data workflows for integrating multiple data sources, including GPS and satellite imagery, to enhance restoration planning and monitoring efforts.
- Analytical, problem-solving mindset with the flexibility to act as a ‘Swiss Army knife’, able to adapt and develop innovative solutions to support a variety of GIS-related tasks.
