Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Operation of Drilling Equipment:

  • Lead the setup, operation, and maintenance of drilling rigs and associated equipment, ensuring they function safely and efficiently.
  • Manage the operation of various drilling techniques, including rotary and percussion methods, to drill boreholes to the required depth and specifications.
  • Monitor drilling operations, identifying and solving any technical issues that may arise to ensure uninterrupted progress.

Supervision of Drilling Crew:

  • Supervise, mentor, and coordinate the activities of the drilling crew, ensuring all team members are performing their duties effectively and safely.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance to the crew during drilling operations, ensuring all procedures are followed according to safety regulations and project guidelines.
  • Ensure the team follows proper drilling methods, borehole construction practices, and standard operating procedures at all times.

Coordination with Drilling Team Coordinator:

  • Work closely with the Drilling Team Coordinator to ensure that drilling operations are executed according to project timelines, budgets, and specifications.
  • Provide regular updates to the Drilling Team Coordinator on the progress of drilling activities, any technical challenges, and potential improvements for efficiency.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all drilling operations comply with World Vision’s safety standards and local regulations, taking full responsibility for the health and safety of the drilling crew.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and training sessions to enhance the crew’s awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Identify potential hazards on-site and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks during drilling operations.

 Equipment Maintenance and Inspection:

  • Oversee regular maintenance and inspection of drilling equipment, ensuring that rigs and machinery are always in good working condition.
  • Coordinate with the Drilling Team Coordinator to schedule preventive maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed records of equipment usage, repairs, and maintenance activities, ensuring equipment logs are accurate and up-to-date.

 Borehole Development and Construction:

  • Supervise the proper development of boreholes, ensuring the correct installation of casing and screen, and the use of appropriate drilling fluids.
  • Ensure that boreholes meet the required design specifications and are developed to produce sustainable water yield.
  • Coordinate with the team during borehole construction to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

 Resource Management and Accountability:

  • Ensure efficient use of materials, fuel, and other resources during drilling operations, minimizing wastage and ensuring accountability.
  • Monitor daily resource consumption and report to the Drilling Team Coordinator on resource needs or discrepancies.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of drilling materials and equipment at the site to prevent damage or loss.

 Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of daily drilling activities, including borehole logs, drilling depths, and equipment performance.
  • Provide detailed reports to the Drilling Team Coordinator, highlighting progress, challenges, and recommendations for improving drilling efficiency.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly technical reports, as required by the project.

 Spiritual Leadership:

  • Uphold and demonstrate World Vision’s Christian values and ethos in daily work, serving as an example to the drilling crew and others.
  • Participate in and encourage the team to engage in daily devotions, fostering a spiritually motivated and unified team environment.

Other responsibilities

  • Assist in hydrogeological investigation for borehole site selection

Required Skills or Experience

Professional Experience

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in water well drilling, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or superintendent role
  • Extensive hands-on experience operating and maintaining drilling rigs and associated equipment.
  • Strong leadership abilities with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
  • High level of initiative, resourcefulness, and problem-solving capability.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in challenging field conditions.

Education, Training, License, Registration and Certification

  • Education: Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Geological Science, Geological Engineering, Hydrogeology, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Certifications in drilling or relevant technical qualifications are preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (D and above) and be willing to travel extensively to field sites.
  • Certifications in water well drilling and rig operation are preferred.

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of drilling techniques, borehole construction, and safety regulations.
  • In-depth understanding of safety regulations and the ability to enforce safety protocols during drilling operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience in preparing technical reports and drilling logs.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during drilling operations

Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement

  • Office based with frequent travel to the field
  • Travel:  20% Domestic/international travel is required.
  • On call:  25%
