The Mechanical Engineer Specialist provides direct output support to the Head of Asset Management in the Africa Business Unit Technical team– in managing the provision of Mechanical Engineering support to enable maximum value from AngloGold Ashanti’s assets. The role is the discipline expert and is the custodian of all matters relating to Processing Plants, Underground Operations, Open Pit operations, and Infrastructure associated with processing and underground. The role excludes HME.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide input into the development of the overall Asset Management Strategy and serve as the discipline master to the regions in the roll-out of the strategy within the mining operations.

- De-risk operations by the identification, justification, and implementation of the discipline-specific Asset Integrity assessments and 3-year SIB capital requirements within the operations
- Lead continuous improvement projects/processes towards world-class operations specifically in terms of equipment OEE optimization.
- Identify new technologies, systems and processes through technology scanning, development, innovation, and industry knowledge sharing to address business opportunities.
- Identify and monitor improvement projects, especially on key safety and other defect elimination opportunities and to ensure knowledge transfer and compliance across the group.

- Development and implementation of medium- and long-term equipment strategies to ensure the sustainability of the operations.
- Managing the deployment of engineering technology in support of the group objectives.
- Continuously identify and evaluate risks and identify mitigating measures to control the risks, resolve emerging issues and escalating technical and safety issues that impact the business or overall AAP objectives.
- Resolve engineering issues that have been escalated by the respective site managers.
- Lead and direct root cause assessments for “acute and chronic” failure modes
- Identify, report and comment on key technical issues, risks and opportunities for value add within area of expertise and the impact thereof on mining, processing and/or project.
QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Qualification
- Bachelor’s or Honors degree or B-Tech or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
- A post-graduate qualification in Engineering and or Asset Management
- Registered Professional Engineer
Experience
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in the Mining or Mine Process
- Commercial acumen relevant to the role
- Strong track record of success at specialist level in the resources industry including business improvement and change management.
- Experience in planning and maintenance of mechanical engineering infrastructure to ensure Integrity over the life of mine.
