WUSC (World University Service of Canada) is a Canadian non-profit organization working to create a better world for all young people. We bring together a diverse network of students, volunteers, schools, governments, and businesses who share this vision. Together, we develop solutions in education, economic opportunities, and empowerment to overcome inequality and exclusion for youth around the world, particularly young women and young refugees.
WUSC currently works in 25 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, with an annual budget of approximately CAD $40 million. We have over 90 staff in our Ottawa office, and over 200 people overseas implementing 16 development projects in collaboration with donors such as Global Affairs Canada, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the African Development Bank.

- LOCATION: Accra
- ELIGIBILITY: Local National, must be legally entitled to work in Ghana
- REPORTS TO: INVEST Project Director
- CONTRACT TERM: 6 months

The INVEST Project
The Innovation in Non-Traditional Vocational Education and Skills Training (INVEST) is a 5 year initiative that will build sustainable pathways to enhanced economic empowerment, well-being and inclusive growth for 5,000 urban poor young women in Accra, Kumasi, and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana.
Working in high-growth sectors, the initiative will test and scale innovative, sustainable models to improve the enabling environment, reduce gender-specific barriers to women’s economic participation, and enhance access to decent work for marginalized women in non-traditional sectors
Nature and Scope
In collaboration with the Public Engagement & Advocacy Officer, the International Volunteer will provide technical assistance on the INVEST project pertaining to marketing and communications activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Marketing
- Provide technical support to key partners to improve marketing and event planning and coordination services
- With the support of the Public Engagement and Advocacy Officer, co-design enrollment campaigns with each of the project 12 training providers
- Support project advisors, partners and other team members to organize project conferences, workshops and trade shows.
Communications
- Working actively with the Digital Strategist and Public Engagement and Advocacy Officer to co-manage WUSC social media accounts; fostering community amongst followers
- Provide training and ongoing support to WUSC staff and interns on story gathering, photography and writing on various aspects of the project.
- Support the design and development of quarterly dissemination of project activity updates. This could be in the form of a newsletter, webinar, etc.
- Liaising with other project teams to write and post 1-2 blogs a month on various aspects of the project during the period of the engagement.
- Work collaboratively with technical advisors, specialists and volunteers to produce relevant case studies. Other Support
- Assist project specialists to complete reports by inserting all relevant photos, video
Other Support
- Assist project specialists to complete reports by inserting all relevant photos, videos, case studies, blogs and other project documents.
- Support the design and development of WUSC Ghana Communications strategy.
- Assist with developing and soliciting content for WUSC Ghana quarterly newsletter.
- Project technical input on communications and project content for the INVEST Project
- Participate in project partners' meetings to share experiences;
- Participate in in-person orientation training;
- Ensure the representation and engagement of women in all activities and program benefits;
- Submit volunteer timesheets, reports and deliverables as required by the project communication team and partner organization assigned to by WUSC.

Required Skills or Experience
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Journalism or Communications or a related field.
- A minimum of three years of experience in a position with similar responsibilities and tasks ( communications, journalism, social media marketing etc.) preferably with an international NGO or operational UN agency.
- Proven knowledge of and experience in developing communications tools and techniques including graphic design and production of documents for public dissemination.
- Proficiency with graphic design software (photoshop, illustrator, etc.) preferred
- Experience with event coordination
- Knowledge in the creation of marketing campaigns (including digital and grassroots)
- Knowledge of running digital/in-person outreach
- Knowledge of job placement platforms (would be an asset)
- Skills in running school campaigns/enrollment drives
- Ability to work effectively in an inter-cultural, diverse and complex work environment;
- Ability to work as part of an international team in a participatory manner;
- Skilled communicator and ability to work effectively across multiple cultures in the English language - both written and orally;
- Knowledge of a local language will be considered an asset;
- Comfortable using online working platforms;
- A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering.
