Job Description: Responsibilities & Requirements
The Midwife at Medicas Hospital is to assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care.
Grade: Staff Midwife
Responsible To: Ward/ Unit Manager
Accountable To: Medical Director
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the organization and delivery of antenatal care to clients.
- Assist with the organization and delivery of postnatal care to clients.
- Contribute to the provision of key services during the antenatal period to improve health outcome for clients (i.e IPT, PMTCT, prevention and control of anaemia).
- Provide counseling to clients on birth preparedness and complication readiness.
- Conduct spontaneous vaginal deliveries for clients.
- Provide education for clients on a range of relevant topics including minor ailments during pregnancy and their management, personal hygiene, breastfeeding, nutrition etc.
- Anticipate and recognize deviations from normal infant deliveries and carry out laid down procedures to safeguard the well-being of mothers and babies such as resuscitation of newborns, treatment of hemorrhage and shock, fetal distress, prolapsed cord, and other life threatening conditions.

- Assist with the organization and conduct of prenatal classes for expectant parents to help ensure safe pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium.
- Assist mothers to initiate infant feeding following delivery
- Assist with the management of breastfeeding problems.
- Carry out other official duties assigned by the Ward Manager/Unit In-Charge
Communication and Working Relationships
- Maintain effective communication with colleagues, clients/patients and visitors in the ward/unit.
- Discuss treatment/management of condition with patient and relatives where applicable and encourage them to ask questions.
- Attend meetings as required in connection with the nursing care.
- Attend and contribute at general staff meetings.
Personal and People Development
- Develop and maintain continuing personal and professional development to meet the changing demands in the area of midwifery service delivery.
- Monitor own performance against agreed objectives.
- Undertake facilitative supervision of Health Care Assistants, students and other junior staff in the ward/unit and teach such staff.
- Participate in the induction of new staff in the ward/unit.
- Participate in the development and implementation of education programmes for patients, their families and others about post discharge care programs
- Keep log of own performance and in-service training log for purposes of appraisal.
Health Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to the health and safety policies, guidelines/protocols (eg. the use of personal protective clothing/equipment
- Take care of own safety and take all measures to ensure the safety of the patient, relatives and staff - reporting all accidents, risk assessments and incidents, completing relevant documentation and undertake further investigation as directed.
- Assist the Ward Manager/Unit in-Charge to maintain a safe, clean, pleasant and therapeutic environment taking remedial action when necessary.
Quality Assurance
- Comply with the Medicas Hospital quality assurance policy and guidelines and work within the prescribed quality standard for the midwifery care.
Required Skills or Experience
Prospective applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Possess a valid pin from the Nurses and Midwifery Council.
- Be willing to work extra hours.
- Possess exceptional customer care and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Must be a team player.
- Ready to work at a short notice.
